Issue

Over 21 miles of the seven tributaries running throughout the Salt Lake valley lay buried under the urbanization and industrialization of its cities, with many aboveground stretches falling on the EPA's List of Impaired Waters. As creeks flow west, they pass unseen through west-side neighborhoods, where marginalized lower-income and ethnically diverse families grapple with the health of their community and environment.

Response

The Seven Canyons Trust is working to daylight and rehabilitate the seven canyon creeks of Utah’s Wasatch Range, restoring beauty and health to the hydrology of the Salt Lake valley. It’s vision presents a new ecological planning paradigm – challenging the past 100 years of storm water management – to usher in the next 100 years of uncovering these waters to improve water quality, create access to nature for nature-starved urban families, improve economic vulnerabilities in underserved communities, and design more livable cities to enhance quality of life.
